What's Happening at Sugarloaf UMC 10/4/10

Join us for our current sermon series...

What if you knew that by simply crossing the room and saying hello to someone, you could change that person's life forever? Just a few steps to man an eternal difference. It has nothing to do with methods and everything to do with taking a genuine interest in another human being. All you need is a heart that's in tune with the Holy Spirit and a willingness to venture out of your 'Circle of Comfort' and into another person's life.

We will have copies of the book for you to pick up ($11/each donation) starting this Sunday. This is the sermon series that the new GROW GROUPS will start with in October. Don't miss it!

This week in our study, Stuart will talk about “Living in 3-D” based on Luke 14:35-35, 15:1-7. This message helps us with practical ideas/suggestions in sharing our faith with others. It addresses some of the objections people raise to sharing faith.

Stuart's "Just Checking In"
In an effort to communicate to the congregation, Stuart writes a weekly "Just Checking In" letter that will be posted here and on the front page of our website.
Check back later for the next installment.

So you think football players are tough because of all the jolts, hits, knocks, and pounding they take? What about those guys with missing teeth that skate on a ¼ inch steel blade and shoot a 3-inch solid rubber disc at you at over 70 mph? And a guy to get on an 800 pound bucking bull named “Scene of the Crash” (a real name) must be incredibly fearless? Well you are absolutely wrong (well maybe not 100%). But what about a guy who picks up the phone to meet with a Christian brother who lost his child or has a seriously ill child? What about the guy who has been meeting with another brother in Christ for six months as he goes through a divorce? A job loss, financial stresses and so on. These ARE tough guys. We don’t think of guys as being caring nor especially good listeners. Yet these guys week in and out do something that most guys fear doing –being compassionate and showing concern. Meet a Sugarloaf Stephen Minister!

This month’s speakers are three Stephen Ministers that have been there themselves as well as with other Christian brothers during some of their darkest days. They will tell their story why they became a Stephen Minister and how they were turned the corner and started to live again. They will share why they felt they needed to give back and also a little about why sometimes it is so hard for us men to be open. Please note that this is NOT a recruitment presentation for Stephen Ministers or Care Receivers. It is a time to share.

Student Life Information:
From Aaron Young, Director of Student Life Ministry

We’re getting geared up for our high school Fall Break Road Trip this weekend! It’s going to be a great weekend for our students to get away and relax from the stress and pressure of school, bond with each other and the leaders, and hopefully be challenged in their walks with Christ. We’re going to be swimming in the deeper waters this weekend as the theme of my messages deals with the question “Is it worth it?” What makes life worth living? What makes Jesus worth following? Is Jesus worth following if it costs me something? Is life worth living when everything falls apart? What gets us through those storms? Please be in prayer that the messages really sink in this weekend! Be in prayer for friendships to be formed and strengthened. Pray for health, safety, and a lot of fun!

Sugarloaf Kids Information:
From Lori Cotter, Director of Sugarloaf Kids Ministry

Many of you know our SK Volunteer Coordinator, Jean Rector. Jean has worked at Sugarloaf Kids for over 5 years and recently she has stepped down from her position to be able to spend more time with her family and to care for an extended family member. We all are sad to her go and will miss Jean tremendously. Please join us in praying for Jean and her family at this time of need. Jean, Joe, Joey, Jeremy, Justin and Jenya will still call Sugarloaf their home and will remain active at our church. There aren’t kind enough words to shower Jean’s time with us and her ministry with. She has been an incredible asset to our team, Sugarloaf Kids, our volunteers and our families. Thank you Jean – we love you and thank you for a good well done. We will be seeing Jean at the BLASt counter starting in the New Year as she has already signed up to volunteer with us! We will have a VERY EXCITING announcement and addition to our SK Team in next week’s newsletter…
